Music influencing across generations
The person i decided to interview is my GF's Mom due to how big she is in music and how much she listens to th
Me: What is your first memory of
music?
Kathi:
Riding in the truck with my dad listening to Eagles
Me:
What was your first experience with music?
Kathi:
Listening to music in the car with my parents because back then we had to
listen to the radio and just pray the following song was a good one.
Me:
How did music impact your childhood?
Kathi:
You would listen to the music on the radio then record it so you can play it
over and over again. Then I would sing in my room to the top of my lungs
thinking nobody could hear me. I had a balcony bed and I would take a post off
to use as a microphone. I thought I was Janet Jackson.
Me:
How did music impact the culture and society around you when you were growing
up?
Kathi:
It influenced the people I hung around with. I really liked Micheal Jackson,
specifically Thriller. Whoever had the “members only” jacket, we had a members
only club. It influenced my style of birthday parties.
Me: What
did your parents think of the music you listened to as a kid?
Kathi:
My mom liked it, but my dad wanted to stop listening to Micheal Jackson and Janet
Jackson and instead go back to listening to the Eagles. But whenever I started
listening to rap (snoop dog) they completely disconnected and wanted me to stop.
Me:
Were you involved in anything like band or choir in school?
Kathi:
Yes, I played the Clarinet.
Me: Did
you play an instrument or take lessons? What was that like?
Kathi:
I took piano lessons and played the clarinet. It was informative. “I only did
it because my mom made me.” I tried it because I was willing to try new things,
however it wasn’t for me.
Me: If
you went to a church, what was the music like, and how did you feel about it?
Kathi:
The style was different than what I listened to. Very traditional (organ). I
thought that was the only way to worship until I grew older.
Me: Was
there any style or genre of music that was off-limits when you were a kid?
Kathi:
No.
Me: Did
you parents influence what kind of music you listened to? Did they push you to
take lessons or play an instrument?
Kathi:
Yes my parents wanted me to take lessons and join the band. I did it my 8th
grade year then I quit.
Me: What
sort of technology did you use to listen to your music? How has that changed
over the years?
Kathi:
I used a radio (Jambox). Which was a radio and a cassette. That is how you
would record the music and play your favorites over and over. I had to go to
the store and buy the single cassette. I saved my money growing up to buy a
white line tape.
Me: Where
did you listen to music when you were growing up? The car? Your room? The
radio?
Kathi:
All of the above, but mostly in my room.
Me: What
sort of music was popular when you were growing up? Did you listen to that kind
of music, or something less mainstream?
Kathi:
Janet Jackson, bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Metallica, Andrea Boccelli. I literally
listened to everything and anything.
Me: What
was the biggest influence of music growing up?
Kathi:
MTV was the biggest influence because that was how you watched the music video
of your favorite songs. We could not wait to get home to watch them.
I really enjoyed getting to read your blog! I think that your girlfriend’s mom and my parents listen to very similar music which is very interesting!
ReplyDeleteI interviewed my mom for this blog and my mom said the said thing for having to hit record as soon as your favorite song came on the radio haha and also told me that to get any sort of lyrics of songs you had to go buy it in stores! Very interesting and cool how different things are now.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your interview! It was interesting to hear about what different technology people used before our time. Its pretty funny to think that people had to record songs they wanted to hear again, instead of just searching it on YouTube or Spotify like we do today.
